What Is a Third Space?
The idea of a “third place” comes from sociologist Ray Oldenburg, who wrote about the everyday gathering spots, like cafés, pubs, and corner shops, where people relax, talk, and feel part of a community. These places matter because they give us room to be ourselves outside of our responsibilities.
A good third space is easy to get to, welcoming whether you come alone or with a group, and comfortable enough that you want to stay awhile. It’s a place where you can show up as you are.
